[Review] ‘BLAQ Style’ by MBLAQ

The Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality – or – MBLAQ recently released their first full album, “BLAQ Style.”  It took the boys a while, but they’re finally here, ripped and ready for your enjoyment.
For what it is, “BLAQ Style” is MBLAQ’s cleanest work yet.  They debuted in 2009 with “Just BLAQ,” the mini-album chock-full of gimmicks, followed by a more diverse approach with “Y” in 2010.  “BLAQ Style” is like a sandwich of both EPs.
As a boy band in K-pop, MBLAQ has had a hard time standing out on their own, especially when they were introduced to us as the guys under the watchful eye of Rain.  Style-wise, MBLAQ possess a sound that can be appropriately characterized as Rain-esque, which is something that has worked both for them and against them as a unit in K-pop.
Rain’s firm emphasis on sexual appeal seems to radiate from MBLAQ.  Aesthetically, it’s a win, but up until this release, MBLAQ has been one of the weakest boy band vocalists in K-pop.  To put it another way, they haven’t really proven (through their promos) that they’re more than just sexy hunks in makeup.
The general idea is that it requires at least a genuine talent to make music, so does “BLAQ Style” finally provide us with a sufficient amount of content to prove that theory with MBLAQ?  Better yet, have they detached themselves from Rain’s grubby little fingers and found a sound of their own?
Well let’s find out, shall we?

Through a series of electro-pop tunes and cheeky mid tempos, one could say they find themselves giving this album a good, “Oh, yeah.“  Listening to this album, there were times when I got into some of the songs, and completely snored through others.  It’s evident during those high moments though, that MBLAQ have really given enough of an effort to hold their own.
Tracklist:
1. Sad Memories
2. Stay
3. Cry
4. Darling
5.Throw Away
6. Rust
7. Tonight
8. Wish You Hadn’t
9. You’re My +
10. Rolling U
11. Oh Yeah (C-Luv & Blue Magic Remix)
12. Y (GR GROOVE Remix)
13. Different Beginning
“BLAQ Style” opens with “Sad Memories“, a short piano intro played by MBLAQ’s leader, Seung Ho, that becomes a distant blur as the album progresses under a far more ‘trendy’ style.  The piano line reappears in a couple other tracks, so its existence isn’t entirely questionable.
The lead single – “Stay” – does a better job at encompassing the overall effects and quirks of “BLAQ Style” than the intro track;  It’s dramatic, and unlike the lead single for their second mini album,”Y,” we’re treated to a serving of less auto-tune and way more umpf.  For a title single, “Stay” is paced very well.   The way the verses pick up then drop off at the pre-chorus is a really nice touch.
As far as vocalists go, because I love singling them out, G.O. is MBLAQ’s pride and joy.  Have you heard his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Lately?  The boy knows his voice, so it’s awesome to hear him let those smooth pipes soar left and right as the song builds up.  It happens throughout this album, and actually, and while we’re at it,  Seung Ho doesn’t sound half-bad either, which begs the question:  Why are we still drowning singers in unnecessary processing?  Love it or hate it, the effect has long tired the majority of us, but thankfully, the reign of auto-tune seems to be letting up and global pop seems to be well on its way to recovery.  Lucky us.

It’s clear that MBLAQ have had a case of bad-processing in the past, the one thing that is probably held accountable for most of their turn-away listeners, but another thing that I find more distressing is the blatant resemblance to Rain.  Even if MBLAQ have announced that they were more hands-on with this album (kudos!), there are still moments when I get a little bit of Rain-ish arrangements shoved into my face.  Take “Cry“, for example.  There’s really nothing wrong with it, but it feels like a recycled Rain song.
Once upon a time, I referred to MBLAQ as “five mini-Rains“, because that’s all I kept thinking when I listened and watched them, but truth be told, they have managed to carve away at that perception with this album.  And that’s a good thing.  The similarities aren’t gone, but at least they have begun constructing an individuality for the group.

As an album, “BLAQ Style” feels complete and well thought out, but I would be lying if I said I was sold on it.  The production is very clean and MBLAQ are sounding better than ever.  The thing is that a handful of the songs are forgettable and lack a complete vocal delivery.  It’s weird, but it’s the up/mid tempo songs that go right over my head.
Hear me out.  Songs like “Darling” and “Throw Away” have great instrumentals, but there’s something lacking in MBLAQ’s vocal delivery as a unit.  There’s no conviction to give these songs that extra kick to actually stick like a pop song is meant to do.  “Darling” and “Throw Away” are catchy, but not memorable.
Granted, MBLAQ are only a year into their careers, so I understand that there’s plenty of untapped potential there, but most of the time it sounds like they’re giving the bare minimum on their recordings.  A worrying vice because we don’t always have a constant visual in our faces as we listen to music.  It really comes down to whether the song grabs hold of your attention without the listener having to force themselves to pay attention.
Surprisingly, it’s the slower tempo songs that stand out over their up tempo counterparts.  Exhibit A: “Rust“.  While MBLAQ are far from taking on five-piece harmonies, “Rust” functions as direct evidence that, when tamed and controlled, they can sound pretty freaking awesome.
Exhibit B: “Tonight“, the melodic, R&B number.  The production on this song reminds me of Teddy’s style (YG Entertainment producer).  There’s not a lot going, but it’s that exact subtlety that gives MBLAQ a splash of charm.

Aside from new songs, there’s an interesting addition of remixed versions of MBLAQ’s older hits, “Oh Yeah” and “Y“.   These reinvented, and chiefly provocative,  versions blow the roof off of the originals.  I’m not a fan of the chorus from “Oh Yeah”, but even I have to admit that the way they flipped the entire feel on the song was awesome.  It gives purpose to all of the “oh yeah” mentions, and it would have been a risky, but probably brilliant, move if they gave the rest of the up tempo songs on “BLAQ Style” the same treatment.
Clap your hands everybody, everybody clap your hands!

As “Different Beginnings” closes the album with another piano line, this time with Seung Ho sharing a few words of gratitude with their fans, I can’t help but slightly appreciate MBLAQ’s effort to produce and deliver a well rounded first album.  MBLAQ offer the styles that work best for them, even those borrowed by the holy Rain of Korea, and pull it off pretty well.  As always, I do have to nitpick at the fact that a lot of these songs start off the same way (Thunder talking over an overused electro beat happens, oh I don’t know, five times!), and most lack a a good hook.  But even if the content is a little lackluster, there’s still a good flow and it contains several glowing moments of awe.
Overall Rating:  3.8/5 – With the right material, I’m sure MBLAQ will absolutely nail it next time.

The ratings are not gone, but I have to urge you to pay more attention to the words than to the numbers.  As with most ratings, they tend to draw far too much attention in the articles, and they end up dominating the entirety of the review itself.
I fully realize that if I don’t give a 5 out of 5 to your favorite idol, then there’s likely going to be backlash, but the amount of people who seemingly scroll through the numerical ratings and rush to the comments to berate me is somewhat disconcerting.

Additionally, questions have crawled out of the woodwork asking what the heck I am doing reviewing music to begin with.  Well, I really don’t like talking about myself, so shame on you for making me!
But seriously, here you go: I am currently an audio production major, and within that field of study, I have had the opportunity to work and learn about recording, producing, and all that fun stuff.  However, my main inspiration to talk about music comes from my own music background as a cellist.  Even though it’s not singing, I’ve been playing for eight years, so I think my ears are trained ones all the same.  While I was never a big fan of lessons, I did study under the principal cellist of the Austin Symphony Orchestra for a while, as well as other local geniuses.  Should I keep going?  Nah, I hate this.  It feels…self-indulgent.
Anyway, as I stated before, reviews are solely opinion based, and their main role isn’t to degrade your favorite artists, but rather to put into writing what I feel is going on with their material and how well it’s being executed.  Because I have set high standards for the music I listen to, it’s only fair to me and you that I remain as honest as possible.  It’s our own opinions that make the world go round, so that’s why I ask for yours at the end of every review.  And no, that question is not an open invitation to bash me mindlessly, but rather to open discussion as to why you like or dislike something, why you think it’s exciting or boring, etc.
So with that said…

[Spoiler: We Got Married] Victoria & Nichkhun quarrel over…

The ‘Khuntoria’ couple of MBC’s “We Got Married” will be studying four-lettered Chinese idioms for this week’s episode.
f(x)’s Victoria brought over a book specializing in those characters to the home she shares with 2PM’s Nichkhun, and suggested that they learn the terms together. Nichkhun outright refused, leading Victoria to declare a battle on the spot.
The competition was said to have been fierce, despite Nichkhun being particularly weak with Chinese characters. In comparison, Victoria was highly fluent with the terms and began knocking at Nichkhun’s pride, leading him to eventually burst out in anger at one of the terms.
Fortunately, the two were able to make up while enjoying a meal of  spaghetti created by ‘Chef Khun’ for the first time.

The music video was shot at a studio late at night due to 2PM’s busy schedule, but despite the long hours, Nichkhun and Wilber Pan were said to have had a lot of fun filming for it.
Nichkhun commented, “It was a fun and exciting experience, and I’m looking forward to the music video. I hope you all look forward to it with me.”
The music video is scheduled for release online on January 31st.

X Japan signs with EMI Music

Japan’s legendary rock band, X JAPAN, has signed a contract with American label EMI Music and they’re preparing to release their first single, “Jade“.
EMI Music’s director said, “It’s an honor to have X JAPAN with our EMI Label/Caroline family. I think this is perfect timing, following the success of their North American tour last fall.
The executive VP of EMI Music Services North America, Dominique Pandiscia, commented, “We can’t contain our excitement over working with X JAPAN.
While the single will be released here in North America, negotiations for international sales (including Japan) are still in session. Before the year ends, the band plans on releasing a new album and completing another tour.

Why aren’t YG artists performing on Music Bank?

It seems fans have been unable to see YG Entertainment artists performing on KBS’s Music Bank for some time now due to the label declaring a non-attendance to the public broadcast network’s 2010 KBS Music Festival.
A representative of the music industry spoke with Star News on January 27th and revealed, “Despite GD&TOP and Seungri being well into their promotion cycles, YG Entertainment artists have not once made an appearance on KBS’s Music Bank since restarting their activities.”
He continued, “GD&TOP and Seungri make weekly appearances on MBC’s Music Core and SBS’s Inkigayo, and for a longer period, it seems that YG representatives won’t be sending their artists to appear on Music Bank, which goes the same for Big Bang’s comeback next month.
Some are speculating that YG’s inability to appear on Music Bank is due to the artists refusing to attend the year-end “2010 KBS Music Festival” last year. At the time, representatives of YG expressed, “We are not able to understand why the ‘Gayo Festival’ is giving a ‘best popularity award’ when they declared that they wouldn’t.” YG artists instead attended MBC and SBS’s year-end ceremonies, both of which did not contain award components.
KBS had clarified that the festival overall focused on music and not the awards, and retorted that they too failed to understand YG’s decision.
Since then, YG artists have not been making appearances on Music Bank. Despite the controversy, representatives of the label explained, “We do not have a bad relationship with Music Bank.”
After missing out on Music Bank last week despite appearing on all other music shows, Seungri will continue to be absent on the January 28th episode.

JYJ: Being banned has encouraged us to be creative

In the midst of what can only be put lightly as a mountain of obstacles, JYJ is putting their best foot forward and unintentionally kicking up the music scene yet again.
Now months after the release of their first album, “The Beginning”, and yet only one live performance (at the KBS 2010 Acting Awards), most would not be surprised if the boys were a bit frustrated. However, the reality? They are optimistic, learning, and growing from the challenges.
In a statement released by a JYJ official, the group says: “Because of our lack of freedom to meet our fans through TV, we had to think of different routes to be connected with them. New concepts like our music essay, visiting shows that are not frequented by celebrities, and trying new things have taught us a great deal.”
Working around their effective ban from popular television by using innovative strategies and concepts like their newly released “Music Essay,” JYJ is not only still connecting with fans, but flipping the conventional marketing strategy upside down.
After being released just three days ago on January 24th, JYJ’s “Music Essay” has already sold 150,000 copies and has taken over the #1 spot on the Bestseller’s List- without any of the traditional on-air promotions.
The boys have  accredited their unprecedented success to their dedicated fans who stuck with them during their split from SM Entertainment- and each personally thanks them in their new album, which they personally wrote, composed, and directed as a thank you to their fans.
Though we may not see them on TV, it goes to say that we certainly haven’t seen the last of them. With Junsu’s performance in the musical “Tears in Heaven,” an “internet drama” featuring 24 hour music, video, and photo contents of the boys set to launch on March 3rd, and an upcoming eight part series tentatively called, “JYJ’s Real 24 Hours”, on the cable network QTV, the boys and their fans seem to be saying that for JYJ, success is guaranteed ’till “fan-dom come”.

JYJ fans begin a bus ad campaign for their idols

JYJ received a warm gift from their fans, who began a bus advertising campaign on January 27th.
A total of 120 buses will carry a supportive message for JYJ members that reads, “We support your youth.” These buses will be seen in Seoul, Kwangju, Daejun, Daegu, and Busan for a month.
The campaign is a voluntary effort from JYJ fans to encourage and support their idols to be active in the K-pop scene.
This is a campaign that publicizes pop culture and encourages not only the artists and fans, but also various individuals who consume pop content,” said a JYJ fanclub union associate. “We want to expand that goal.”
Fundraising for the bus advertising campaign lasted for 11 days (from the 14th to the 24th) and total of 9,817 participants collected 158,097,228 KRW (including international donations).
The bus advertising campaign will last for a month, from January 27th to February 26th. There are plans for a second advertisement campaign to take place after the first one wraps up.

MBLAQ’s “Oh Yeah” plagiarized by Ecuadorian artist, Andrea Bucaram

A performance video from Ecuadorian artist Andrea Bucaram has recently become a hot issue, due to the striking similarities between her song, “Oh Yeah“, and MBLAQ’s debut song (of the same name).
The repetition of the words “Oh yeah” in the chorus, the tweaked melody, and the familiar beats all point to the conclusion that this artist plagiarized the song from MBLAQ. If those points weren’t enough for skeptics, she also titled the song, “Oh Yeah”.
Andrea Bucaram
MBLAQ’s manager June tweeted a link to the video while stating “…this isn’t even plagiarism….they straight up copied the song. We will deal with this after we are sure about the situation. If anyone knows information about the singer in the video, give us a mention/message.”
Member G.O retweeted the link, and couldn’t conceal how flabbergasted the video made him. “wow….she copied the song really well.”

JYJ delivers controversial lyrics for “Untitled Song Part 1″

When you need us, we’re family, but when we need you, we’re strangers.
JYJ’s latest album,”Their Rooms, Our Story,” was finally released today, and as many predicted, lyrics from a particular song has been causing some buzz in the media due to its negative portrayal of SM Entertainment.
Titled ‘Untitled Song Part 1,’ the song was self-written and composed by member Yoochun. According to Korean media outlet, Kuki News, the lyrics state:
After finally being met with jackpot success overseas and finding out that we had created unimaginable results, I headed to the company on the day of our pay with light steps.  But on the statement of accounts that I received that day, the results were a minus.  I thought maybe I read wrong and checked again, but everything was written as an expense.  Damn, all that money was written off as expense.  Exactly what kind of expense was it that all that money disappeared?  I still can’t forget the higher representative’s words that told me that it would be difficult if I left the company.  What the seniors said were right: Would you want to keep the ones that still willingly want to make money for you?
It continues, “This is never our efforts as a product.  The day I die as a human being.  It’s an effort made because I don’t want to be left with regrets.”

JYJ’s reality TV show, ‘JYJ’s Real 24′, to air in February

Cable channel QTV revealed, “The reality program ‘JYJ’s Real 24′ is scheduled to air sometime in mid-February. Members Park Yoochun, Kim Jaejoong, and Kim Junsu will show their every move.
‘JYJ’s Real 24′ will follow the boys as they participate in CF filmings, musicals, and all sorts of other activities. In addition, their secret house will also be shown.
Producer Lee Moon Hyuk from QTV expressed, ‘Lately, JYJ’s mysterious private life has gotten the interest of fans, which has amplified the attention for this program. Even though it was a little awkward for JYJ at first, they quickly adapted to the cameras and had fun during filming.

A day in the life of JYJ’s Junsu

Out of the three members in JYJ, Junsu is known as the ‘quiet one’ in the group. In interviews or press conferences, Junsu has always maintained an image of mystery, giving short and sparse answers.
Recently, reporters of Sports Chosun received the opportunity to spend 24 hours in what they called his ‘rare presence’. The star has been juggling a bevy of individual activities (such as rehearsing for his musical, “Tears of Heaven“), in addition to his efforts for JYJ.
In tailing Junsu for 24 hours, the reporters sought to lessen the gap between his true, friendly image and his Hallyu star image.

▶ Kim Junsu enjoys the computer?

Junsu’s day starts at 10:45 AM. The minute he wakes up, he heads over to the Red Carpet Hair Salon, located in Apgujung. He’s been a frequent client of the salon ever since TVXQ began using it in 2004, and is on friendly terms with the stylist and staff members.
No matter where he goes, one could always find the script for “Tears of Heaven” in his hands. Junsu explains, “Sitting on a chair in the salon can sometimes be a waste of precious time, so I try to make use of it lately by reading over my script.
With just a single glance, it’s easy to see that he’s been practicing hard, as the script already looks worn out. Junsu commented, “The script changes often. They said that the script for our next rehearsal changed a lot too. I sometimes sing the wrong lyrics since we have to go through sudden changes when we’ve been practicing something else for days already.”

▶ “Son Ye Jin is really pretty…”
At 1:45 PM, he heads to a restaurant for a late brunch. Judging by his physical appearance alone, you’d think that he’d enjoy a morning coffee with fresh fruits and toast – but as it turns out, his tastes are all Korean.
I’m not picky with what I eat. Potato stew, kimchi stew, and rice noodles are my favorite dishes.”
The restaurant he’s visiting today is ‘Samwoojung‘, which is located in Yeoksam-dong. “This place has the best kimchi stew,” he claims with a thumbs-up. He also ordered an extra side dish of rolled eggs.

At the mention of some of the reporters wanting a nice glass of soju, Junsu declines and explained, “I can’t even put alcohol close to my lips. When I sometimes want to enjoy the atmosphere, I’ll order virgin, gold medalist, or pina colada drinks with no alcohol at the bar.
He also reveals that although he doesn’t enjoy drinking, he’ll pay for the entire meal himself, as his personality just naturally wants to take care of others. “I just think it’s great having fun with everyone.”
One friend of his reveals, “He doesn’t even buy his own clothes, he really spends nothing on himself. But he doesn’t hesitate for even a moment in buying luxury goods for his close friends.”  Unlike Jaejoong and Yoochun, who both enjoy shopping at the malls near their dorm in Kangnam, Junsu claims that he detests shopping.
On the topic of flirting, he reveals, “I look at personality. It’s difficult to decide on an ideal woman with just her physical appearance. First of all, I hate women who smoke. Drinking is okay.” There’s an exception, though, as he claims that he’ll eliminate a woman that is too good at drinking.

When I once visited France, I saw little blonde girls calling out ‘papa,’ which I thought was so cute that it even made me dream of interracial marriage. As opposed to physical appearances, I’m more attracted to their speech or actions.
But does he really not look at physical appearance? “The only person I thought was particularly attractive was Son Ye Jin and Han Ye Seul. They both have different charms, since Son Ye Jin is pretty like a puppy, while Han Ye Seul is cute like a cat…”

▶ Ping Pong King Kim Junsu?
After completing his meal at 3:30 PM, he stops by Caffe Bene in Nonhyun-dong for a five-grain latte. He’s only been wearing a thin leather jacket this whole time, and he finally notices the blistering cold as he heads straight back to his office.
The minute he walks inside, he heads over to a ping-pong table and begins to play a match.

Normally an avid fan of soccer and bowling, he claims to have fallen in love with the fun of ping pong. The reporter suggests a death match on the spot, to which Junsu responds by taking off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves for the impending battle of pride.
Throughout the match, he cocks his head to one side while explaining that his spin isn’t working as well as it usually does. “On my last birthday, Jaejoong and Yoochun-hyung bought me a really good ping pong table. They ordered the best no matter what and set it up in the living room after getting rid of the dresser, running machine, and sofa.”

He quickly gets back into the game, and like his title of ‘#1 Ping Pong Player of CJES Entertainment,’ he wins with a score of 21 to 17.

Park Jung Min "Reason For Not Meeting SS501 Members Often Is..."

Park Jung Min "Reason for not meeting SS501 members often is..."

Group SS501's Park JUngMin release his first solo album 'Not Alone', starting his solo activities.

From a member from group SS501 who has mostly Asia fans, to using his own name 'Park JungMin' to come back again.

From the different outlook as compare to the past could see his changes. Reducing weight up till 10kg, he who is with slimmer face shape and body, has the toughness of 'cool boy'.

After reducing weight looking more mature's Park JungMin said: "Looking at SS501's past DVD (was too fat), had a shock, decided to reduce weight." then he laugh cheerfully.

After changing to his new agency CNR Media, for solo activities, of course there will be a lot of fear and difficulties in many areas, regarding this, Park JungMin said: "After completing SS501 activities, was really hurt, kept thinking "What to do in future?" Was worrying for very long. Because it was very painful emotionally, had even thought of qutting (entertainment circle). Even up till the level that needed to eat sleeping pill then can go asleep. Don't know whether it is because of emotional stress, during that time really felt very pain."

JungMin also said: "However now looking back at that period, felt that has learned something. Learned that actually at the same time when I has became single, can also work harder to make myself stronger. If continue to have activities in a group, maybe I would not be able to feel the cruelty of reality. Maybe I would not work harder in order to own even stronger ability, so (solo activities) from another angle could be the opportunity to allow me to develop a sense of independance. Will also always think of the past, the period when I was working hard alone participating in the interview. Gradually could feel that 'SS501's fan do not definitely is my fans' that kind of worries has diminished. Therefore my confidence is continuing to expand."

Currently SS501 members remain in contact, will also cheer and support for each others activities. Not long ago, in order to support acted in Musical 'Cafe-In''s main lead Kim HyungJun, Park JungMin personolly went to attend his musical, became a hot topic.

Regarding question of whether members will attending event and meeting, Park JungMin said truefully: "We will always cheer for each others activities, will also often communicate via phone. However if meeting to often, I fear that I will start to feel dependent, therefore now will purposely try to control not to meet them. Especially now, not at this important period during this solo activities."
